Am a big fan of matt ridley. One of the few really eclectic intellectuals, with an accessible style. Weaves fascination anecdotes into pearls of insight.
The idea in this boom is that bartering is the human instinct that gave rise to economics, which gave rise to civilisations. Not sure i buy the whole concept but it certainly is thought provoking & entertaining.

The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves, by Matt Ridley, Fourth Estate, RRP£20, 438 pages
It will not be easy, but it is perfectly possible, indeed probable, that in the year 2110, a century after this book is published, humanity will be much, much better off than it is today and so will the ecology of the planet and society."
